The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem , is a Christian organization that began as an Amalfitan hospital founded in Jerusalem in the year 1080. During this time, their main purpose was to provide care for the poor and sick pilgrims who had made the decision to travel to the Holy Land. After the Christian conquest of Jerusalem during the First Crusade, the Hospitallers became a religious/military order established under its own charter, and was charged with the care and defense of the Holy Land.
