Pope Urban II was born in 1035 to a noble family in northern France.

He joined the Roman Catholic church in 1042 and was rapidly promoted to Cardinal-Bishop of Germany by Pope Gregory VII. When Gregory died in 1088, Urban was elected pope.

In 1095, he organized the first crusade through his famous slogan "God wills it!"

Pope Urban II died on the 29th of June 1099 which was 14 days after the crusaders captured Jerusalem.
